12-member panel created by medical technology
firm Guidant Corp. in the wake of criticism
that it withheld important safety information
about its products has an unusual array of members
with varying specialties.
A leader in ethics and
scientific research. An authority on risk and reliability of complex technological
systems. An expert in communicating public health issues. A statistician,
and the former chief regulator of medical devices in the United States, to name
a few.
That's along with the expected
collection of cardiologists -- with expertise in advanced heart failure,
cardiac arrhythmias and the use of the devices in question, implantable cardioverter
defibrillators (ICDs)
[The panel] will tackle
issues on how to interpret low-frequency trends among devices that might
affect patient safety and how physicians make decisions on device management.
It will also reassess benefits and risks to patients in light of new information
about devices, analyze component failures and develop more transparent communications
to doctors and patients about potential malfunctions. |
